From Vision to Breakthroughs

Hospital Picaso shares its first successful case of a combined minimally invasive robotic approach for severe endometriosis involving the bowel. The procedure was performed using NOSES (Natural Orifice Specimen Extraction Surgery), allowing deep endometriosis resection with robotic assistance, while the bowel specimen was removed through a natural orifice (the rectum), avoiding the need for an additional abdominal incision typically required in such cases.

This advanced surgery was led collaboratively by our multidisciplinary team, Dr Sharifah Halimah Jaafar, Consultant Gynaecologist, and Dr Cha Kar Huei, Consultant Gastrointestinal, Bariatric & General Surgeon.

Hospital Picaso is proud to mark the first successful Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) for uterine fibroids in Malaysia, performed on 9 January 2026 by Dr Tan Ee Ping, our Consultant Gynaecologist. This minimally invasive treatment uses controlled heat energy to shrink fibroids, helping to relieve symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pelvic pressure.

RFA offers a uterus-preserving option for suitable patients, with benefits including a shorter hospital stay, reduced recovery time, and a quicker return to daily activities.

Hospital Picaso became the first hospital in Malaysia to successfully perform robotic Vaginal Natural Orifice Transluminal Endoscopic Surgery (vNOTES) for endometrial cancer. 

The procedure was led by our leading Women’s Health experts, including Dr Tan Ee Ping, Consultant Gynaecologist, Dr Michael Lim Chung Keat, Consultant Gynaecologist and Gynae-Oncologist, and Dr Debbie Teh Sue-Jian, Consultant Gynaecologist. This approach offers patients with endometrial cancer a minimally invasive surgical option that removes the disease effectively while reducing recovery time and surgical risks.

Hospital Picaso proudly introduces the Harmony Pro, a next-generation linear accelerator and the first of its kind in Malaysia. Designed to deliver advanced external beam radiation therapy (EBRT), the system supports precise, efficient and streamlined treatment delivery. This addition further enhances our integrated oncology services, enabling coordinated cancer care across surgical, medical and radiation disciplines within a single, specialised centre.

History was made at Hospital Picaso when Dato' Dr Loh Chit Sin, Consultant Urologist, performed the first irreversible electroporation (IRE) procedure on a prostate cancer patient through the NanoKnife System, the first case of its kind in Malaysia. 

This minimally invasive procedure uses electrical pulses to destroy cancer cells while preserving nearby structures like nerves, leading to better preservation of urinary and sexual functions.

Hospital Picaso officially opened its doors on 19 June 2024, marking the beginning of a new chapter in advanced specialist care.

This milestone marked the culmination of years of planning and collaboration, introducing an integrated model of care where multidisciplinary specialists work together under one roof to deliver coordinated and seamless treatment.

Behind the scenes, 2023 was a year of structured preparation and alignment. Departments were established, clinical systems were carefully designed and tested, and our teams underwent rigorous training to ensure readiness for launch.

In 2022, the groundwork for Hospital Picaso began to take shape. This included zoning applications, regulatory planning, and early-stage coordination with clinical and operational stakeholders.

It was a critical phase of transformation — turning an ambitious concept into a structured healthcare development plan, supported by a growing team committed to building something truly different for the future of specialist care.

The journey began with a group of experienced doctors united by one purpose — to advance the standard of surgery and oncology care in Malaysia.
