KUALA LUMPUR: Hospital Picaso marked its official launch today, underscoring Malaysia's rising demand for advanced surgery and integrated oncology services.
Although operations began in June last year, the event formally introduced the hospital's facilities, technologies and multidisciplinary care model.
Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir officiated the launch.
Medical director Datuk Dr Luqman Mazlan presented the Petaling Jaya-based hospital's two centres of excellence in advanced surgery and integrated oncology.
The centres support clinical services across the urology, women's health, breast, gastrointestinal and liver, and cancer units.
He noted that "each centre is a team of senior consultants… collaborating across disciplines" to deliver coordinated and personalised care, particularly for complex conditions such as cancer and endometriosis.
Datuk Dr Loh Chit Sin, chairman of clinical practice and board director, highlighted key technologies used at the hospital, including Koelis for precision-guided prostate procedures, the Da Vinci Xi robotic system for minimally invasive surgery, and the NanoKnife system for non-thermal tumour ablation.
The hospital aims to provide comprehensive treatment locally so fewer patients need to travel abroad, he added.
A symbolic ribbon-cutting on the Da Vinci Xi system marked the launch, emphasising the hospital's focus on integrating technology with clinical expertise.
"While clinical care is at the core of what we do, we also recognise the need to build capacity… and to grow the next generation of specialists," Dr Loh said.
Since opening on June 19 2024, Hospital Picaso has recorded several national milestones.
This included the highest number of robotic surgeries in Malaysia within its first year, the country's first NanoKnife procedure for prostate cancer, and the first scarless robotic-assisted VNotes surgery for endometrial cancer.
